Presentation
The Master’s course in Chemistry aims to prepare students with a graduate degree to develop studies of scientific and technological nature for the understanding of conceptual instruments and interdisciplinary methodologies related to the area of Chemistry, qualifying them to act in the fields of teaching and research, as well as to work as specialized professionals.
The program of post-graduation in Chemistry (PPGQ) presents an interdisciplinary profile which provides students with knowledge, skills, and experience in research. It aims to contribute, in an effective way, to the scientific and technological development of the region and of the country.
Philosophy of PPGQ
The professional education at all levels of the contemporary world demands an individual with a vision integrated with science, allied to a profound knowledge of their specialty. It is important to reflect upon the fact that the profile of the contemporary scientist is made up of an interdisciplinary education, mainly due to the scientific challenges of our time to which there are no obvious solutions.
Chemistry is considered to be the area of knowledge that is linked to the generation and application of knowledge, which relates the composition, structure, and processing of materials with its properties and uses. The activity of research and production in chemistry should provide the instruments for the improvement of quality of life, in greater harmony with the environment.
Objectives
-General Objectives
The Master’s course in Chemistry aims to prepare students with a graduate degree to develop studies of scientific and technological nature for the understanding of conceptual instruments and interdisciplinary methodologies related to the area of Chemistry, qualifying them to act in the fields of teaching and research, as well as to work as specialized professionals.
- Specific Objectives
- Historic:
The Post-Graduation Program in Chemistry from the Federal University of Sergipe (UFS), the only state of Sergipe, has initiated its activities in 2003.
Since its creation, 144 teachers have been trained by November 2015. Currently, the program has 41 students enrolled with entry between 2012 and 2014, and since 2009 there was an expansion of supply to 50 posts annually, and from the 58 candidates the selection of 2015-1 and 2015.2, had 20 approvals. With a doctorate instituted this year, we had 28 enrolled in two semesters, and 13 approved.
It is a notable increasing number of students interested in attending academic Master in Chemistry, compared to 5 students enrolled at the beginning of the course in 2003. And those numbers are expected to increase with the approval of the doctorate course. Moreover, there is already a demand for masters teachers waiting for the start of the doctorate course. It’s emphasized a growing interest in the program's lines of research that has attracted candidates from other states, such as Bahia, Pernambuco and Alagoas.
The main target of the program graduates (about 50%) is to attend doctorate in institutions with grade 5, 6 and 7. For example, Chemistry Institute of UFBa, Fundamental Chemistry Department of UFPE, Institute of Chemistry of Araraquara / UNESP Department of Chemistry, UFSCar, USP's Institute of Chemistry of São Carlos and Chemistry Institute of UNICAMP.
Another part of the students who completed the Masters are teachers in the state of Sergipe. They are part of the 19% federal school system and 17% of the state. A percentage of 3% of our graduates, who have completed their doctorates, were hired in recent years as teachers of the Department of Chemistry at the UFS, the campus of St. Cristóvão and the Department of Chemistry Campus Itabaiana.
But the Sergipe state education network is still quite lacking in qualifications of its teaching staff. With 236 chemistry teachers in high school, all the teachers require doctoral level qualification.
