The Graduate Program in Mathematics - PROMAT was approved by the Federal University of Sergipe - UFS in temporary association with the Graduate Program in Mathematics at the Federal University of Pernambuco in June 2010. The academic activities of the program began in January 2011, after its approval by the Scientific-Technical Council of CAPES in October 2010. In 2016, a new APCN was submitted with the main objective of breaking the temporary association with UFPE. This new project was approved by the CAPES CTC and, since August 2017, only UFS professors are accredited in Promat. Currently, this is the unique postgraduate (academic) program in Mathematics in the state of Sergipe, and its implementation was an important initiative for this state, which currently has about 2 million and 200 thousand inhabitants and several municipalities nearby. Since the creation of PROMAT, 51 masters in mathematics have been trained. The profile of the graduate is divided between Ph.D. students in Mathematics and College Faculties, and it has contributed to the educational improvement in this area of ​​knowledge. In addition, the course seeks to attract not only graduates from undergraduate courses in the Colleges in Sergipe but also graduates from programs in neighboring states such as Alagoas, Bahia, and Pernambuco.

The Academic Master's Degree in Mathematics at the Federal University of Sergipe has the following objectives: to prepare students for doctoral programs in mathematics in the country and abroad; train human resources generated for the exercise of teaching activities in high school and Colleges; provide the integration between academic research groups, such as government institutions and civil society, the development of the State; promote a continuous exchange between the different levels of education at UFS and provide a continuous qualification of the UFS faculty. In addition, we hope to train a master in mathematics able to participate in the selection processes of the doctoral programs in mathematics in the country and abroad. Required to the range of subjects of the program, especially as mandatory, the graduates will be prepared to exercise teaching activities in Colleges and Universities.

PROMAT's faculty has professors from the Mathematics Department at the Federal University of Sergipe, São Cristóvão and Itabaiana Campi. These professors come from renowned institutions in the country and work in a wide variety of research areas, such as Algebra, Analysis, and Geometry / Topology. The research activities developed by the professors leaped the implementation of the program, as a result of a set of actions: the approval of projects by administrative bodies, cooperation with external parties, exchanges with other research institutions, involvement of students in various projects research and infrastructure improvement.

PROMAT estimates the exchange of its teachers and students. We can highlight scientific visits to other institutions, participation in scientific events, and post-doctorates. Besides, since its creation, PROMAT has been organizing several events that have given the program a lot of visibility. Let's name a few:

1. SIDIMEC (International Meeting of Hamiltonian Dynamic Systems and Celestial Mechanics) held in December 2010.

2. The 1st Mathematics Colloquium of the Northeast Region in March 2011.

3. UFS Mathematics Summer Program held annually between January and February in its tenth edition.

4. The II International Meeting of Mathematics in Northeast Brazil in February 2012.

5. Specialized meetings, such as the seven editions of Workshop in Analysis and PDEs, and the Differential Geometry Meeting of the Federal University of Sergipe held in February 2017, and 2021.

Such activities seek to promote the exchange between national and foreign researchers who work in the different areas of mathematics and who are involved with the research projects within our program. We always try to promote and encourage teachers and students to the critical analysis of the current Mathematical development, by deepening the studies that address the research lines of the program.
