The Masters of Arts in Anthropology at UFS holds Social Anthropology as its area of concentration and places its focus on studies on social and cultural issues in the State of Sergipe and the Northeast Region of Brazil, while not losing sight of the articulation with the contemporary demands of studies from comparative perspectives, contrasts, connections and networks with other social spaces in national or transnational contexts.
 
The program goals are:
1. To offer Master’s degree in Anthropology;
2. To prepare professors and researchers for higher learning education;
3. To develop and consolidate research on anthropological issues in Sergipe, which may be also related and contrasted to other contexts of the Northeast Region of Brazil, of the country as a whole or even of transnational spaces;
4. To encourage the research in the field of anthropology and the active participation of qualified professionals for the development of activities aimed at social action and public policy sectors;
5. To promote scientific and cultural activities, such as seminars, meetings, symposiums, lecture cycles, round tables, open to the general public and intended to disseminate research results;
6. To establish exchanges with other HEIs in Brazil and abroad in order to deepen the flow of ideas and knowledge about the advancement of Anthropology and the Social Sciences and to conduct research, and,
7. To assign Master's Degrees in Anthropology.
 
Profile of the professional to be trained:
 
There are two types of target audience, on the one hand the students holding undergraduate degrees in the Humanities, mainly Social Sciences, and having research initiation activities already carried out at some point of their graduation or specialization, if applicable. On the other hand, graduates in different areas, who develop work in educational and/or research institutions, even if in related fields, but who have proven to develop activities correlated to the research lines proposed by this Master’s course. Throughout the course, the student should develop evident competences in the field of research in Anthropology, as well as strive to participate in events and bibliographic production, in addition to writing and defending the Master's Thesis. It is expected that those holding a Master’s Degree in Anthropology can work in research institutions, in primary and higher education, as well as provide various advisory services to social institutions related to the area.
 
Students who get admitted to the PPGA (Anthropology Master’s Degree Program) must earn 32 (thirty-two) credits, as follows:
12 (twelve) in Mandatory Disciplines
04 (four) in Master's Thesis
12 (twelve) in Optional Disciplines, and,
04 (four) in Complementary Activities, which can be both the Teaching Internship, with 04 (four) credits, and Extracurricular Activities, with 04 (four) credits.
Foreign Language Proficiency Exam (English or French)

 

The program aims to meet an academic demand from many different courses, adopting a perspective both specialized and interdisciplinary. It has Social Anthropology as its area concentration and the following research lines 1) Power Relations, Politics and Contemporary Society, 2) Memories, Knowledge, Performative Practices and Heritage and 3) Culture, Languages, Cognition and Symbolism.
