PALESTRA: Multidimensional and Comprehensive 2D GC for Flavour Analysis, Assessment, and Authenticity, with Selected Chiral Separation Applications

Dia 25/06/2015 no Mini-auditório do CCET/UFS às 15 h

ABSTRACT: We recently reported development of a system which comprises GC-O, GC´GC-FID, MDGC-O and MDGC-MS capabilities in the one instrument.

This system has now been used for a number of additional studies, such as volatile aroma components in wine, banana spirits and orange juice. These were supported by GC´GC-QTOFMS analysis with accurate mass MS to assist in the identification step. Whilst the system was validated for these odour studies, the results provided little in the way of new aroma-active compounds in the samples, although the banana liquor apparently had not been previously studied.

As a further project, we have re-evaluated the use of MDGC with chiral analysis for authenticity assessment of tea tree oil (TTO: Melaleuca alternifolia). Industry standards presently are based on bulk analysis of the oil, with some reference to major components, which is best provided by GC. This study applied enantioselective GC (eGC) to limonene, terpinen-4-ol, and α-terpineol. These 3 components had acceptable chiral resolution in standards, but limonene suffers interference from p-cymene in TTO samples.  A fast MDGC method with a chiral second column gave excellent assessment of the chiral ratios of all three compounds. The method was tested on 45 samples from Australian TT plantations, and gave consistent ratios; for commercially-sourced samples, considerable variation in the ‘standard’ ratios was found, suggestive of authenticity concerns.
