RESUMO:

Academic English language writing is a social practice with vast literature which goes from structure to style. On the other hand, contemporary academic writing has been crossed by the affordances offered by artificial intelligence systems and tools. Digital environments operated through algorithms, deep learning and machine learning, for instance, have provided writers and students with the opportunity of developing writing skills as well as having quite human-like translations. In light of that, this dissertation aims at analyzing the social impact of generative artificial intelligence and platforms on academic English language writing in order to understand how technologies function as arenas of meaning-making on such topics. Based on a meaning-making epistemology and on translanguaging as language conception, this research ponders: how has generative artificial intelligence impacted the learning and the teaching of academic English language writing? This Ph.D. dissertation is characterized as a conceptual endeavor towards technologies and digital platforms regarding academic English language writing. It is characterized as a state of knowledge through the catalog of popular discourse and a literature review on generative artificial intelligence. The thesis statement defended herein is that generative artificial intelligence unveils and unbalances education as to topics such as evaluation, which has been historically used as punishment instead of an effective learning phenomenon, as well as the fact that education has not been known as effective into teaching how to ask question in opposition to only answering granted correct answers. That being said, the preliminary analysis has projected that automated writing feedback has shown to be well accepted in university settings, and that learning how to write based on classical writing concepts is still relevant when it comes to developing as a researcher.
