RESUMO:

AI: word of 2023. The abbreviation of artificial intelligence (AI) has been named the word of the year by Collins Dictionary. Understanding this, in particular, would not require expertise, since it has become routine to see social media posts, digital newspaper news, YouTube videos, and podcasts addressing AI. Although AI is far from being a new presence in our daily lives, it seems that only after November 30, 2022, with the release of ChatGPT, our society has started acknowledging that as a fact. ChatGPT is an AI chatbot, which functions by generating human-like responses after being provided a prompt. This AI-powered large language model is only one of the examples of Generative AI technology that is currently accessible to the public. Its capabilities of generating human-like content have provoked discussions and impacted social, political, economic, and academic contexts raising profound ethical concerns, especially since it still lacks regulation. When it comes to education, it is known that technological advancements instigate changes and influence the nature of writing. Despite the subtlety of these shifts and their gradual incorporation into predominant educational and pedagogical views on literacy instruction, learning, and assessment, their impact on writing is undeniable and unstoppable because writing is a social practice. Therefore, this research aims to apprehend the concept of writing impacted by the adoption of Generative AI in societal contexts. Considering that the study of writing cannot be done in isolation from our society, knowledge, and culture, it is crucial to adopt an epistemology and methodological approach that rejects oversimplifying realities. Understanding the intertwined nature of social, academic, and technological systems means accepting the chaotic tapestry of human essence and experience. All things considered, I adopt Complex Thinking (Morin, 2015) in order to pursue this path of uncertainty, innovation, and randomness. This qualitative research is documentary and bibliographic as regards data sources and gathering procedures. The data are documents selected on internet-based platforms, whose narratives address AI and its relation with education and writing as well as ChatGPT and writing. In light of this, I present Analytical Entwining (Boa Sorte et al., 2023) as the method of analysis for this investigation. While upholding ethics and scientific rigor, its flexible nature provides researchers with four to-and-fro movements as they engage with data. Accordingly, the argument I intend to state is that the adoption of Generative AI broadens the concept of writing as a social technology impacting societal and educational modes of functioning.
