Approval by CAPES in 2008, the Master’s Degree in Science and Mathematics Teaching (PPGECIMA) was created with the proposal of seeking the approximation of teachers to the theoretical basis of studies and research in these areas, providing fundamental reflections on the perspectives of the different priority lines of research in the present time and to encourage works that allow to advance in the understanding of the problems related to the learning and the scientific diffusion. With this, this Master's Degree aims to provide an important contribution to the construction of theoretical-methodological support that will have the result of greater political, pedagogical and scientific consistency for the apprehension of the problems that permeate the teaching.

The scope of the research developed in this Program ranges from those that deal with the genesis of the knowledge of science and mathematics, the objectives of Scientific education, the relationship between teaching and learning, the relation of sciences to socio-cultural issues, the scientific and everyday knowledge, science and technology as a culture and productive force, to those that seek the development of curricular proposals, specific didactics or form of evaluation of school processes.

Thus, differently, from the programs developed within the scope of the Faculties of Education, the existence of an interdisciplinary dimension between the different units will allow to privilege the more specific aspects of the very nature of Biology, Physics, Chemistry, and, Mathematics, be they historical epistemological or the specific content of those sciences.
The academic Master's Degree in Science and Mathematics Education, for reasons derived from being the only Post-Graduate Program in Science and Mathematics Education of the State, emphasized the issues directly or indirectly related to Basic Education in its multiple dimensions, ranging from the Teacher Training, the Teaching and Learning Processes, issues related to Interculturality and Ethnic Racial Relations, among others. Despite the changes that a history of more than a decade brings, the overall objective of the Program has been to deepen studies on the local and regional context.

The PPGECIMA offers an academic Master's Degree program, which has as its target audience educational professionals holding diplomas in undergraduate courses in physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics, and pedagogy, mainly those graduates. Therefore, the core is open to graduates and postgraduates in Exact and Biological Sciences, as well as in the Human and Social Sciences, who work at different levels of education, as well as professionals from related areas who wish to dedicate themselves to research in teaching.
The general objective of NPGECIMA is the continuation of the training of teachers, educators and researchers capable of understanding and investigating the production of science and its forms of socialization, considering the productive appropriation of scientific and technological knowledge, the social dynamics of science and technology, and the contextualization of teaching.

The completed master's projects have contributed to significant scientific productivity, which is characterized by scientific books and articles, which mainly address topics such as:

- Teaching from a science-technology-society perspective;

- Social representations and teaching;

- Training of young people and adults in basic education;

- Contemporary methodologies aiming at meaningful learning (virtual objects, software, concept maps, among others);

- Distance learning;

- Scientific literacy;

- Teaching and learning of science and mathematics in non-formal spaces;

- Theories and assumptions that support the teaching/learning practices of science and mathematics.

- Inclusive education and ethnic-racial relations in science education.

These topics are current and pertinent, based on studies published in recent years by governmental entities and in the scientific literature.

The PPGECIMA is guided by concerns based on:

- Democratize access to scientific culture, aiming to understand the knowledge built in the everyday world and the scientific world, as fundamental aspects for the exercise of citizenship and for the exploitation of the potential of the professional and social responsibilities of each individual;

- To train qualified professionals at Masters level to work at different levels of education, aiming, in addition to the training of human resources, the integral training of man as a social subject capable of building scientific knowledge, its techniques and technologies without losing sight of the nexus with the theoretical educational field. With this, to train teachers from the perspective of the undeniable connection between the different dimensions of the human being, a field in which science takes place and becomes a continuous movement of production. After all, it will be the human capacity to transmit and innovate the patrimony of knowledge that will enable facing the contemporary challenges imposed on scientific education and the demands for socially responsible technologies;

- Analyze the relationship between the construction of scientific and everyday knowledge and its implications for the teaching of science and mathematics as well as in the interactions between technology, society and knowledge production in the teaching-learning process;

- Develop actions that articulate theory and practice in teaching science and mathematics;

- To promote the constitution of skills directed to didactic situations in teaching science and mathematics to assist in the construction of interdisciplinary teaching projects,

- Analyze the links between knowledge / scientific knowledge, technology and society considering the transversality of knowledge;

- Promote the construction of resources for dissemination and popularization of science and mathematics at different levels of education.

The Program is structured in two lines of Research:

1) Curriculum, didactics and teaching methods of the natural sciences and mathematics;

2) Science, culture, scientific and technical knowledge in contemporary societies.
