The Master’s in Development and Environment of the Federal University of Sergipe (UFS), established and coordinated by PRODEMA - Regional Program for Graduate Studies in Development and Environment, which is part of PRODEMA Network which also take part the Federal University of Ceará, Piauí, Paraíba, Rio Grande do Norte, Pernambuco and the State University of Santa Cruz / BA.

PRODEMA integrates a network which has an interdisciplinary and inter-institutional character which aims to promote the training of specialists at the level of Master Degree, able to actively participate in the production of knowledge, the drafting of teaching plans and research, focused on the issues of sustainable development of the Northeast region of Brazil.

The spontaneous association of these universities started in 1992, upon a proposal by the Federal University of Alagoas at the 54th Plenary of the Brazilian Universities Rectors Council, held in the city of Aracaju / SE, promoted by the Federal University of Sergipe, commencing of the activities in 1995 as the Master course in Sergipe.

In 1995, the UFS subprogram was approved by CAPES and currently has grade 5, with specialization in "Desenvolvimento de regiões semiáridas e costeiras" (Development of semi-arid and coastal regions), with two lines of research, namely: PLANEJAMENTO E GESTÃO AMBIENTAL (Planning and Environmental Management) and DINÂMICA E AVALIAÇÃO AMBIENTAL (Dynamics and Environmental Assessment). Account currently with PhDs professors credentialed to act as mentor teachers and student admission is held annually by Call Notice of Post Graduate board, on the possibility to train skilled professionals to carry out teaching and instrumentalized to conduct research in the field of environmental sciences.
